Keeping international students from studying in U.S. wrong solution

The Gleaner from Henderson, Ky., on its editorial page proclaimed, “Clamp down on foreign visitors... Make sure that foreign visitors leave when they are supposed to leave... Make sure that they do what they say they are going to do, such as study in our universities.” From these comments, one could quickly move to a belief that we should no longer allow any international students to enter our beloved land.

Veteran dad gives new perspective

With the recent attacks on our home front, more than ever a uniform represents honor and unity. But to me, it reminds me of my father. My dad was pulled out of rural Frankford, W.Va., to serve in Vietnam.

Hardest work not always class

In her dorm room, Jessica Facundo has a spiral notebook of index cards, the kind that students use when studying for history exams or conjugating verbs for a language class.

World needs caped crusaders to save roast beef, but ditch the tights

Ours is one of the few societies that idolizes large men and slinky women in tights for heroes. Folks with outlandish monikers like “Man of Steel Man” and “The Amazing Spatula” (Scraping evil from the streets!) wage battles with even more outlandish folks who might introduce themselves as “The Sinister Dr. Steve” or the nefarious “Crabula.” Comic books have often been a source of heroic displays for children - and even adults - as their favorite characters clash on newsprint, in titanic struggles that sometimes hold the fate of mankind in the balance.

First birth makes med student grateful

I will turn 24 on Monday, and, as with any birthday, this one is being preceded by an assessment of the years already past. Accuracy and self-respect demand that I admit I have done nothing of any real worth since the day I was born.

Election Day brings back memories

It was perhaps the most frustrating night for American journalists - and I was one of them. The election of 2000. Yikes. By nightfall, every newsroom in the United States was in turmoil.

Time for U-M to stop excuses, realize underdog can be better

I can’t speak for everybody, but I’m really getting tired of the bias toward the University of Michigan whenever it comes to MSU. It seems like every time the Spartans make the maize and blue look bad, there are a million excuses why it happened, except for the reason that MSU just came out on top. According to a friend of mine in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines are absolutely livid about Saturday’s last-second touchdown play that handed victory to MSU.

Railroad companies should take responsibility for bad crossings

Earlier this semester, when I was supposed to finish reading a journal article that needed to head for an editor, prep a lecture for class and evaluate a bunch of papers for my students, I was instead consumed with thoughts of something that affects everyone’s lives on campus. It concerned the railroad situation at MSU and the possibility of more deaths than we have had because of the seeming lack of concern by the railroad interests that grind the university to a halt before 8 a.m.

For the folks who stole my cell phone - crime just doesnt pay

A couple weeks ago, I noticed that my cell phone was missing. I didn’t think too much of it at first, as I’m notorious for losing things - pencils, money, train of thought - nothing is safe from my lack of organization.A couple days later, it dawned on me that despite my clumsiness with my personal property, I’m usually a bit more careful with devices and items that generally cost as much as my entire usable paycheck. So after a day of retracing my steps, and a careful search of drawers, boxes and pants, I concluded that my phone was lost.
