Oil greediness may lead to downfall, salvation of newest country

The nation of East Timor territory has just recently been changed into the Democratic Republic of East Timor - a signifiable name for the world’s newest country must hold a great deal of meaning to the Timorese people who have lived, and fought, in one of the worst civil wars a nation has ever faced.

Clubs, balls, carts and a little bit of sportsmanship

This is a column about golf. I’ll do my best to avoid the obligatory ball jokes that most trained humor professionals might make when writing a golf column, but I can’t guarantee anything. As the days (supposedly) get warmer, hundreds of citizens head out to the links to take part in the exclusive “gentleman’s game” known as golf. Recently, I joined some of my co-workers in a rousing round of the sport as part of an outing sponsored by the Michigan Press Association.

Readers opinions make page exciting

For me, like a lot of people I know, the opinion section of a newspaper is always a highlight. It’s where, ideally, everyone has a chance to speak their minds as a part of that wonderful First Amendment we all hold so dear. But for this particular section to work, there needs to be more than just one guy ranting.

Watching death gives no perspective on life

Everyone knows “Code Blue,” which makes it worthless as a code, so what comes overhead is “Code 333, MICU, Code 333.” A code is simply a call for help with the resuscitation of a patient who is close to death.

Dont just complain about world; help solve problems

Thousands of peaceful marchers aren’t nearly enough. If protesters want more than the pitiful 15-second spot they earned on CNN Headline News Saturday, they’ve got to do some damage. It’s not like anybody takes these protesters seriously now.

Film critic ends reign, reflects on life, movies

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been writing movie reviews for nearly a year now. For almost a full year I’ve been writing both serious commentary and dirty jokes about actors, actresses, writers and directors, and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to get some of it in the paper. Some people have no idea who I am, and some people think I suck.
