The editorial Stability, longevity needed for College of Law (SN 10/9) presents faulty conclusions and provides an inaccurate set of facts regarding the status of MSU College of Law’s seeking a permanent dean. It causes me to question if your publication has some vendetta, when a singular negative event in the past is repeatedly reported upon instead of actual newsworthy events happening both here and in the 12 other colleges on campus.

It is absolutely ridiculous to tell us that our cheers are causing parents to not bring their children to the games. Let’s talk about all the tailgating that goes on beforehand. Parents bring their children to those gatherings, where more swear words are said in one minute than in one single cheer of ours. Parents get drunk and let their children do whatever they want. They let them throw beer bottles into the Red Cedar River, run around aimlessly and even have them hold their parents’ beers because they are either too drunk to hold it themselves or are busy playing catch with their friends. We pay plenty of money to sit in those seats and if we want to do those cheers, it’s our decision. Every week our stadium is still packed. It doesn’t seem to me like we are having any problems with people not wanting to come back. We say the same words that you know people are saying at home, before the game and probably even during the game right along with us.

Some vegetarians on campus feel MSU cafeterias don’t offer enough variety to suit their tastes, even as Housing and Food Services continues to expand vegetarian options. Are these concerns valid, or are people just complaining too much?

Two female students were each assaulted twice Sunday between 12:45-1:15 a.m. after an argument over a picture on Facebook.com, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. While attending a party at Cedar Village, two 19-year-old students started arguing with two unknown females who were upset over an online picture of them kissing a male, McGlothian-Taylor said. The two victims left the party, but were followed to the area south of Spartan Stadium, where one victim was punched in the face. The victims ran to North Wonders Hall, where a witness reported seeing the assaulted female’s face being pushed into a glass door and another female being scratched and struck in the chest after a verbal argument, McGlothian-Taylor said. The witness reported seeing two males in the vicinity.

The conduct of the student section in recent years has been appalling and the university is right to attempt to curb it. However, whoever decided it was an excellent idea to let Zeke the Wonder Dog on the field while Mark Dantonio’s message played on the screen should be fired. It’s quite obvious which presentation the student section is actually paying attention to. Instead, the university should begin refusing to allow such student section favorites as Zeke and the Helmet Shuffle in any game where the student section uses such vulgar cheers.

Recently, in keeping up with current news regarding the Jena 6, I read about steps being taken to disarm the racial tensions surrounding the situation. Something I found intriguing about the steps being taken is that they are very shallow, half-hearted attempts to appease the public eye. Take, for example, Jena High School’s action in deciding to cut down the ‘white tree’ that seems to be the catalyst for this whole controversy. Sure the tree stood as a symbol for racist roots, however, is it really the tree that is perpetuating these thoughts? Or is it that people are incredibly blind to the actuality of the existence of racism in today’s seemingly ‘colorblind’ society?

The Cancer misconceptions (SN 10/9) article is completely misleading. First, “... artificial sweeteners are so widely used by Americans, it would be immediately obvious if they caused cancer.” Really? This is your grounds for proving the safety of a product? How many millions of people used Vioxx, used thalidomide, painted their houses with lead paint and insulated their homes with asbestos? All of those turned out to be extremely unsafe, and in the case of asbestos, people actually developed cancer. One may argue those events are too old to be relevant, but Vioxx was recalled in 2004 and toys with lead paint are surfacing daily.
