In the 51st minute of the MSU men’s soccer team’s game against Illinois-Chicago, it looked like the bounces would continue to go against the Spartans.
A tie isn’t the worst way to open the Big Ten season.
The MSU women’s soccer team bounced back from a disappointing 2-1 loss to Wisconsin on Friday and dominated its game Sunday against Minnesota, 3-0.
The MSU men’s soccer team opened up its Big Ten season with a 1-1 tie at Northwestern on Saturday.
Following Friday’s game against Wisconsin, Tom Saxton let his players know that their effort just wasn’t good enough.
Last year, the MSU men’s soccer team entered the Big Ten season on a five-game winning streak, eventually finishing sixth out of seven with a 2-4-0 record in the conference.

As the MSU women’s soccer team heads into the meat of its Big Ten schedule, the value of defense can’t be understated.
Colin Givens spent just three weeks on the roster of an Major League Soccer team, but the former Spartan — who was drafted in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft in January — said it was the best three weeks of his soccer career. The Colorado Rapids cut the defender in February, and a determined Givens, who was a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team selection for MSU in 2010, went to Europe briefly to play for a team in Finland. Now, after a spring knee injury, he’s back at MSU pursuing his degree before hitting the field again to play the game he loves — hopefully sooner rather than later. — Compiled by Pat Evans, The State News
Well, it wasn’t an ideal weekend for MSU sports fans. The football team came out in it’s first real game of the season and laid an egg. There were some positives to take from the game, but the negatives were much more obvious. And, to make matters worse, the Spartans have some pretty big injury issues to deal with on an already-struggling offensive line.
The accolades continue to roll in for Laura Heyboer.
Notre Dame continued its success against MSU on Sunday, when the MSU men’s soccer team lost 1-0 to the Fighting Irish.
