MSU hockey (12-12-2, 6-4-2-2 Big Ten) completed a weekend sweep of No. 19 Penn State Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans beat the hardworking Nittany Lions 3-2 behind a hat trick from sophomore forward Mackenzie MacEachern. Junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand made 40 saves in the game, earning his 12th victory of the season.

MSU hockey (11-12-2, 5-4-2-2 Big Ten) shutout the Big Ten’s second best offense on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena as they beat No. 19 Penn State 3-0. The Spartans got another good performance from junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand, who made 28 saves for his third shutout of the season.

MSU hockey (11-12-2, 5-4-2-2 Big Ten) defeated No. 19 Penn State (15-8-2, 7-2-1 Big Ten) 3-0 Friday night behind junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand’s 28-save shutout. Sophomore forwards Mackenzie MacEachern and JT Stenglein scored a pair of second period goals, and junior forward Matt DeBlouw scored in the third period.

This weekend, Munn Ice Arena will feature two teams that finished at the bottom of the Big Ten last season. MSU hockey (10-12-2, 4-4-2-2 Big Ten) will face off against No. 19 Penn State (15-7-4, 7-2-1 Big Ten) in a battle of programs trying to turn the corner. The Nittany Lions have been one of college hockey’s biggest surprises this season, and come into the weekend having gone 6-0-2 over their last eight games.

Outdoor hockey games always come with unknown variables and on Saturday night, U-M (16-8, 8-2 Big Ten) handled the elements much better than MSU (10-12-2, 4-4-2-2 Big Ten). The Wolverines scored just 1:43 into the game and never looked back on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Spartans at Soldier Field in Chicago. Junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand made 33 saves while allowing three goals and junior forward Matt DeBlouw scored the lone goal for MSU.

MSU hockey (10-12-2, 4-4-2-2 Big Ten) had its three-game winning streak snapped Saturday night losing 4-1 to U-M (16-8, 8-2 Big Ten) in the Hockey City Classic. MSU fell down 3-0 under the lights at Soldier Field and could not muster a comeback against its in-state rivals. Junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand finished with 33 saves and junior forward Matt DeBlouw scored the Spartans lone goal in the game.

For the second weekend in a row, MSU hockey (10-11-2 overall, 4-3-2-2 Big Ten) will face No. 14 U-M (15-8 overall, 7-2 Big Ten) in a historic venue. After last weekend’s 2-1 win over U-M last weekend, the Spartans will face the Wolverines for an outdoor game at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday night as part of the Hockey City Classic. The Spartans are currently tied with Penn State for second place in the Big Ten with 16 points, while U-M leads the conference with 21 points.

MSU will face the same opponent this weekend, but it will be a different looking Wolverine team testing the Spartans this time around.

A native of Butler, PA., junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand relishes at any opportunity to go home. With the MSU hockey (7-11-2, 1-3-2-2 Big Ten) season spanning over nearly seven months, including practices and games all throughout the holiday break, Hildebrand does not get many opportunities to travel back to his old stomping grounds.
