Many moons ago, I wrote a column about a recent breakup experience saying that with about 20,000 guys on MSU’s campus, there was bound to be one who was taller than me and cute at the same time. Oops.

For as long as can be remembered, concerts have been to college kids what Florida is to tourists. The best-known names in the entertainment industry — be it rappers, singers, bands or comedians — always seem to possess a magnetic force, hauling in crazed fans, truckloads of revenue, and, most importantly, great nights all around.

I spent more than a week submitting my application to MSU. My best friends, sister and parents extensively combed through it with me. Not because it was extremely tedious, although it was, but because it was online.

Job applications are one of those necessary steps in a career that promises more frustration than opportunity. A single application can take quite some time to fill out. And sometimes, the best you can hope for after submitting an application is briefly meeting with the manager and shaking hands.

The anticipation grew with every passing minute. I eagerly looked forward to this moment all week. College made me realize I couldn’t live without him, no matter how hard I tried to move on. It was especially hard on those lonely nights when I was left with no one to hold.

The arrival of the autumn chill coincides with a number of exciting fall rituals. From picking pumpkins and eating donuts at the local cider mill to preparing one’s Halloween costume and planning trips to haunted houses, fall is an exciting time of year.

You finally break free from the traffic jam of the serving line with a heavy tray in your hands. That’s hands, plural. Don’t bother trying to pull out your phone to call one of your friends and see where they’re sitting. You don’t have a free hand.

College students determine success in different ways. For some, it’s evolving from apprehensiveness to feeling comfortable in new social settings. For others, it’s eclipsing athletic aspirations. For most at MSU, success ultimately means balancing personal goals with the constant demand of academics.

I walk up to the door of my classroom and turn the knob — it’s locked. I walk down the hallway to the other door and try again, and that one is locked too. As I turn to lean up against the wall and wait, I realize that half my class is sitting in the hallway. Yet, no one informed me that the door was locked. Maybe everyone was just shy. More likely, they were too absorbed in their technological world to take a chance on face-to-face communication.

March 7, 1972: East Lansing passes the country’s first non-discrimination ordinance that includes sexual orientation. Protections for gender identity were added later.

I have a confession. Besides my roommate, I haven’t made much of an effort to get to know many of the people in my residence hall. With classes so far away from my room in East Neighborhood (also known as the edge of the galaxy) and my workplace, I often leave early in the morning and don’t get back until after 11 p.m. That makes it hard for me to participate in many of the activities my RA plans.

When a person thinks of what an average college experience is like, a number of stereotypes quickly pop up. For example, they might think of a frat party with excessive amounts of drinking. Or maybe they’ll think of a nerdy kid constantly in the library with his head buried in a pile of textbooks. Neither of those hypothetical college students are doing anything wrong. The truth, however, is a combination of both extremes and everything in between.

The reports from areas under the dominion of the Islamic State have been shocking, to say the least, especially for any of the religious minorities facing persecution. Iraq’s largest Christian city, Qaraqosh, recently fell to ISIS militants, and if their occupation of the city of Mosul tells us anything it’s that the entire situation is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. The group has driven all practicing Christians out of the city. That kind of religious persecution is foreign to the consciousness of many in the West, and it can be difficult to fully grasp the situation.

Even in the most ideal scenarios, stepping into university life is stressful. Whether you are a lifelong resident of the community or one of the newly relocated, there is sure to be culture shock. And an adjustment period, which no amount of denying or partying can ward off, will set in. It’s change. It’s difficult. Even the strongest of us will face a trial or two before midterms start to creep around the corner.

Apparently, the last great vice of college students in America isn’t drinking, drugs, partying too hard, sleeping around or eating too much unhealthy food in cafeterias — it’s smoking. There is something fundamentally unfair about the fact that those other habits are socially acceptable for college students, yet smokers are stigmatized to a shameful degree. Last week, another columnist from The State News argued that the university should consider banning all on-campus smoking, an idea that I do not agree with.
