I read Police inspect classroom gun threat, find phone (SN 11/12) and believe that how the MSU police went about rescuing students from a cell phone-wielding student is testament to the fact that guns should be allowed on campus.
According to the article, the police received the tip that a student could be carrying a firearm in Conrad Hall at 3:15 p.m. and the police arrived at the lecture hall between 3:35 and 3:40 p.m. This means that it took the police at least 20 minutes to arrive at Conrad Hall.
The police are incapable of being everywhere, at every time, to respond to every situation. By banning guns on campus, only law-abiding citizens are disarmed. Had a student at Virginia Tech been armed when the madman went crazy with his pistols, it is quite plausible that fewer people would have been killed.
By creating “weapon-free zones,” we really do nothing more than inform the crazies that they are able to rampage our communities and not have to expect resistance of any kind. It is like putting a sign on one’s house to announce that the owner does not have a security system or a firearm and then being shocked when the house is robbed.
We are fortunate that the student only had a cell phone, because if he had more sinister intentions and was armed, he would not have faced serious resistance for at least 20 minutes.
