Obama right candidate to lead country in 2009
Tweet
For the past eight years, the United States has suffered under policies that have rewarded the few while hurting the many. Americans have watched as the deficit soared, the economy partially collapsed and the world’s view of us soured.
It’s time for a change.
That change is what Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has pledged to bring to the White House, and it’s time to give him a chance to do exactly that.
The State News Editorial Board formally endorses Obama for president of the United States and urges all voters to help elect him Nov. 4.
Obama’s economic plan addresses the tough questions we’re currently facing and appears to be a possible solution to the quagmire in which the United States has found itself.
Given the growing divide between the rich and the middle class, it only makes sense to level the playing field in terms of taxes. If you make more, you should pay more, because you’re better equipped to shoulder such a burden. It’s an idea Republican presidential candidate John McCain once espoused, right on this campus in a visit earlier this year.
The Obama health care plan like a good first step toward solving a problem that is increasingly becoming worse. Extending Medicare to families without insurance and allowing those with plans to keep them if they’re satisfied might not be a perfect solution, it’s a good first step to helping those currently gambling with their futures due to a lack of health coverage.
An Obama presidency also will likely repair many of the tattered foreign relations that have been left in the wake of eight years of cowboy diplomacy. His pledge to sit down with foreign leaders — even those hostile toward the United States, like Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — is a sign he’ll be more likely to look for a diplomatic solution to a problem rather than a military one. Hopefully, such a stand will allow the United States to avoid entering into yet another unneeded military conflict.
Obama’s choice of Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., as his running mate also showed an awareness and desire to compensate for his weaknesses in both foreign policy and overall experience in the political arena. Biden is a long-time member of the Foreign Relations Committee and a the senior U.S. Senator from Delaware.
More than anything, Obama’s conduct during this time of crisis for the nation shows that he’d be the leader that the country needs. His steady hand will likely help the country cope with any upcoming situation and allow him to be the rock for citizens to lean on in times of stress.
McCain is an honorable man who has served this country with dignity.
In 2000, he might have been the right answer for the country, but unfortunately, his voting record since has demonstrated he would simply represent a continuation of many of the policies that have brought us to our current state.
With the country’s economy reeling and our military fighting on two fronts, it’s more important than ever that we elect the proper person to lead us forward. During the past year, Obama has proven that he’s that man.
America is on the wrong path. A vote for Obama will help put us back on the right track.

This has to be the funniest column I have ever read in the history of the snews. You mean to tell me that the snews actually needed a column to “formally” endorse him??? It could have been a rabbit on a stick, but if that rabbit and stick were a democrat, you would have endorsed it. You are some special people.

“A rock for citizens to lean on in a time of stress.” I like that line. Leaning on Barack Hussein Obama makes it easier for him to reach into your pocket and steal your wallet and to put chains around your hands to steal your liberty. Of course, this is the type of thing that modern liberalism (read: stalinism) is all about.

To EAwer: The State News is a corporate entity distinct from MSU. The same is true for ASMSU. The University has its own legal existence, and technically, is unaffiliated with both The State News and ASMSU. That is how they have gotten away with nonsense like this for years.
The solution is simple. Look in the ASMSU bylaws. Every so often they are required to hold a referendum about funding for ASMSU. Next time they do, start a massive campaign in favor of de-funding its overinflated existence. The State News gets money from advertising, but also in part from those refundable ASMSU taxes you pay each semester.
A successful campaign like this would not kill ASMSU or The State News, but it would certainly put a serious dent in their operations. Again, its a course of action I have encouraged for years.

Oh, and one of the Biggest Criticisms of President Bush is that he never called on American Citizens to sacrifice for their country in a time of need. “Ask not what your country can do for you …” etc.?
Well its about time for those who have done pretty well financially to make a sacrifice and give something back so that we can get things back in order: pay for the “bail out,” balance the budget, reduce the national debt, invest in our infrastructure (remember the Twin Cities bridge collapse?), work toward energy independence, etc. That is ALL in our national interest and somebody has to pay for it. Whats left of the middle class sure can’t afford to right now, but guess who can?

NEWS ALERT STATE NEWS MORONS: MCCAIN IS NOT BUSH. I REPEAT, MCCAIN IS NOT BUSH.
I hate it when people lump the two of them together. McCain has not had a problem standing up to party leaders in the past and it won’t happen in office. And change? What change? He’s all talk. In case you forgot to notice his party has the majority in Congress which means that all laws were first passed by his party, NOT the president.
And one more thing, when have the jackasses (very fitting) at the State News supported any republican? If I could take dumps in the shape of a donkey you guys would probably vote for it.

Come on Steve,
McCain sold out to the neo-cons to get where he is today and you know it. America is sick of the Republican party, which is why me could see a “super majority” in Washington come January.
As for the Democratic Congress these past two years? They haven’t been able to get anything done that wasn’t on the Bush/Cheney agenda because Bush vetoed, or threatened to veto, every single bill that came across his desk he didn’t like. The ONLY thing the Dems were able to do after the 06 mid-terms was get rid of Bush’s rubber stamp on Capital Hill

Voting for a socialist out of emotion just because you’re sick of the last eight years is not wise.
The “fundamental change” Mr. Obama promises will be unlike anything we have ever seen. Socialism/liberalism/communism does not work and will not work in America. The American Experiment, as our founders called, was built on the premise of free markets and individual responsibility. It is ingrained into our psyche. Once Americans have realized who they elected, the execution of Mr. Obama’s socialist policies will have to be enforced through suppression and propaganda. This is inevitable.

Fitting for a party that has maintained power by exploiting rifts in Americans’ cultural identity for years. A vote for Obama isn’t just a vote for ‘change,’ it’s a vote to keep cynical politics out of power. Banning abortions and ranting against gay marriage won’t solve America’s daunting financial, military, and social problems.

“STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Andrew Natalo, a 21-year-old junior at Pennsylvania State University, carefully prepared for the weekly Students for McCain meeting. He reserved an extra-large classroom that could seat 100 students. He invited the rival College Democrats, so the two sides could have a friendly debate.
“I’m really hoping people show up,” said Mr. Natalo, an admirer of Senator John McCain since seventh grade. “Obama is obviously more popular on campus. You can’t deny that.”
“Many college students are enthusiastic about Mr. McCain’s candidacy. They feel passionately about conservative principles, have faith that he will keep them safe, get a kick out of his “straight talk” (and his post-“Daily Show” sarcastic edge) and are enthralled by his fiery running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.
“Yet on many campuses, the dorm rooms with the McCain-Palin stickers are oases in a sea of Obama-Biden signs.
“McCain supporters are outnumbered, outspent and generally outgunned by the legions of young, liberal college students who came out for Senator Barack Obama in record numbers during the primary season. The Republican campaign did not reach out to them until very late, and missing were the technological connectors that their generation relies on.
“And they are supporting a candidate at some odds with the young: Mr. McCain voted for the war in Iraq, has admitted that he does not know how to use a computer and would be the oldest person ever elected to a first term as president ..”

Just a wooden caricature that would make Oscar Wilde puke; yours is a valueless assumption. Inflated, tinfoil hat nonsense.
There is a cultural rift in the United States that has suffocated meaningful political discourse for decades. Fox News vs. NPR. Red state vs. blue state. WSJ vs New York Times. This requires needs a transformational figure to bridge a chasm that has only widened and deepened since it was first widely recognized during the Vietnam war.
Calling one another names and doomsaying re: BLOODY REDS is not a sensible political position when, to the sober observer, we finds ourselves in a period of drastic transformational potential.
Obama presents the best opportunity to heal old wounds between Palin’s ‘pro-America’ parts of the country and city-slickers. His political career was built on that principle. If that divide is never conquered, the cynical politics that produced the 2004 electoral map will ensure that the US remains a divided, bitter nation with a populace more concerned about one another’s cultural habits that with the well-being of the state itself. How else could one explain such political ambivalence on topics as clear cut as gay marriage and torture (human rights, anyone?)?
This potential is more important than any tax cut/hike, which Congress will never pass anyway.
The McCain campaign has often urged voters to vote safe. That’s exactly what the communists did in Eastern Europe after the Wall fell. Often, the hands of the inexperienced are the hands best prepared to guide a troubled nation.
