Men's soccer comes away with clutch 1-0 victory over Maryland to open Big Ten season

In their first Big Ten game of the season, the men's soccer team beat the Maryland Terrapins 1-0. The win moves MSU to 4-1-1 on the season and gives them a 1-0 record in conference play. The Spartans, under the lights, at Ludwig Field in front of thousands of Maryland fans got out to an early lead with a goal by junior midfielder Jason Stacy, with an assist coming off a head pass by senior forward Tim Kreutz around the 9 minutes into the first half.

Senior Profile — Fatai Alashe reflects on sibling rivalry, wants Final Four berth for men's soccer

Men’s soccer senior midfielder Fatai Alashe, born and raised in Northville, Mich., recalls learning the game of soccer as a blur. His father’s love for the game wore off on him as a boy, and he’s been playing ever since. “It’s all kind of a blur, it was mostly just my dad, my dad’s a big soccer fan..so I just learned it from him,” Alashe said. “I’ve been playing since I was a baby, probably three years old, and (my dad has) been teaching us stuff since then.”

After injuries to Montague and Kreutz, men's soccer will look for younger players to step up

After defeating Loyola-Chicago this past Sunday, the men’s soccer team has moved to 3-1-1 on the season heading into their first conference game of the year against Maryland on Sept. 19. The Spartans will need the other members of the team to step up while senior forward Adam Montague and senior forward Tim Kreutz sit out with injuries. According to head coach Damon Rensing, junior midfielder Jay Chapman is one of those guys, commenting on his performance after Sunday’s game.

Men's soccer loses Adam Montague in loss to Valparaiso, 1-0

Beginning the game with a moment of silence for those that were lost in the tragedy of 9/11, the men's soccer team, playing on the anniversary of that devastating day, lost to Valparaiso 1-0 on a cold and cloudy day in DeMartin Stadium."This was the most talented (Valparaiso) team we've played, and yet we played really well today in some aspects...we created more than enough chances," said head coach Damon Rensing. "If you don't put a chance or two away you leave it to chance... we had a couple that could have easily went in on our side, sometimes soccer is cruel."

Men's soccer begins season with 1-0 home victory over SMU

The men’s soccer team defeated SMU in their first game of the 2014 season on a mostly-sunny day in DeMartin Soccer Stadium, 1-0. The first half saw both teams struggle to generate much on offense with the only close opportunity coming from MSU’s senior midfielder Fatai Alashe on a nearly missed header at the 2:34 mark.

Men's soccer to begin season this weekend against SMU, Florida International

This weekend marks the beginning of the season for the men’s soccer team. With two games scheduled this weekend — Aug. 29 against SMU and Aug. 31 against Florida International ­— the team will have a busy weekend.Despite two games this weekend, the team’s current focus is SMU. Despite SMU’s 3-12-2 record in the 2013 season, MSU will not look ahead of the Mustangs.

MSU men's soccer continues historic season

The MSU men’s soccer team is entering relatively uncharted territory. For the first time since 1968, the 11th-seeded Spartans are headed to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight after a 1-0 upset victory against Georgetown on Sunday afternoon. They take on Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Saturday with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
