Playing at Northwestern always is special for Lykendra Johnson. Welsh-Ryan Arena sits about 20 miles away from the sophomore forward’s hometown of River Forest, Ill., meaning family and friends likely will fill the stands when the Spartans play the Wildcats at 8 p.m. tonight.

Merchant blasts Spartans' leaders after loss

Embarrassing. Negligent. Inexcusable. Lowest point. Those were the words women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant used after watching her team’s offense fade into the night while blowing a 14-point second half lead in a 48-45 loss to Wisconsin on Thursday at Breslin Center.

It’s the morning of Dec. 6. The MSU women’s basketball team is a few days removed from one of its biggest wins ever at Breslin Center, a 72-66 victory against then-No. 4 North Carolina. The challenge that day: conference foe Indiana in the Big Ten opener.

Everything MSU was missing during its sluggish effort Sunday against Indiana was there — and more — Wednesday night against No. 8 Xavier. The Spartans brought the energy, excitement and enthusiasm that head coach Suzy Merchant thought was missing Sunday in a dominating 66-53 win against the Musketeers Wednesday night at Breslin Center.
