Spartans fall to Nebraska 60-51

The No. 9 Spartans had a chance to take the outright lead in the Big Ten race, but Nebraska had other ideas. Led by Terran Petteway’s 23 points, the Huskers spoiled senior guard Keith Appling’s return to the court by topping the Spartans at home, 60-51. A win would have given MSU sole possession of first place in the Big Ten after Michigan fell at home to Wisconsin earlier on Sunday. The Spartans and Wolverines remain tied atop the conference with a Feb.

No. 9 MSU beats Northwestern by 15

Adreian Payne dominated as the No. 9 MSU men’s basketball team (21-4 overall, 10-2 Big Ten) put on a three-point shooting clinic in an 85-70 win against Northwestern (12-13, 5-7 Big Ten) Thursday night.

Seeing the light

Sometimes on the big stage, when nobody expects it, the curtain opens up and the spotlight shines on whoever is standing at the center. With senior guard Keith Appling out indefinitely with a wrist injury, junior guard Travis Trice has joined one of the most scrutinized student groups at MSU — the basketball team’s starting lineup. In his two games as a starter against Penn State and Wisconsin, Trice has protected the ball like he owns it, dishing out nine assists and committing zero turnovers. Although there are facets the Huber Heights, Ohio native can improve on, head coach Tom Izzo likes what he sees out of his new starting point guard. “I think he’ll get better this week,” Izzo said.

Badgers top Appling-less MSU in Madison

MADISON, Wis. — The Spartans blew their only chance to beat Wisconsin in the regular season, as Traevon Jackson hit a 10-foot jump shot with 2.1 seconds left in the game to give the Badgers a 60-58 win. “(I’m) disappointed we didn’t find a way to win it,” head coach Tom Izzo said.

Wisconsin leading MSU at halftime

It’s another classic game between No. 9 MSU and Wisconsin, as Sam Dekker and Josh Gasser’s 16 combined points have helped the Badgers take a 30-22 halftime lead. Wisconsin’s Josh Gasser was the man down the stretch as he nailed a 3-pointer and hit two free throws to cap off an 11-0 run at the end of half.
