MIDDAY UPDATE: City Council to consider downtown redevelopment project

Space along Division Street in downtown East Lansing could be getting a little tighter. A local developer hopes to squeeze new retail space and rental apartments into a narrow lot between two existing buildings — a compromise after city officials rejected his original plan. The East Lansing City Council will decide whether to permit the project at its meeting Tuesday night. The proposed building is a four-story, 10,000-square-foot structure with retail space on the first floor, and seven two-bedroom apartments on the upper stories.

There are two types of houses in East Lansing — the party house and the Urban Outfitters apartment display wannabe. I have only lived in the former. After more than four years in East Lansing, living in two party houses — one on Durand Street and one on Park Lane — and having been host to more than a dozen house parties, I think I can consider myself a connoisseur of sorts. Throwing a successful house party requires a multitude of items: a house, of course, roommates who also like to party and don't care about stains on the carpet or layers of sludge on the kitchen floor, understanding neighbors, an unlimited supply of red plastic cups and the perfect iTunes mix. If you want a party house, the first task is to find some party-loving roommates.
