There is a certain quirky eerieness about today, Friday the 13th. Strange superstitions and an overall scary aura surround every Friday the 13th, but especially this one, in October, just a few weeks before Halloween. Today, much like Halloween, has developed a plethora of creepy superstitions.

Octoberfest begins tonight

Before the winter weather comes to stay, Old Town Lansing is giving you your “Last Chance to Rock” in the streets. Fourteen local bands, 15 vendors and a projected 15,000 to 20,000 people will invade Turner Street in Old Town Lansing this weekend for the seventh annual Old Town Octoberfest.

Two years ago, Annie Scott turned her teeth orange. The hospitality business senior wasn’t demonstrating her holiday spirit. She had eaten too many Halloween Oreos. “I started eating them and I was like, ‘Wow, these are really good,’ and 20 minutes later, I smiled at someone and my teeth were orange,” she said. The orange cookies are part of a growing list of specialty foods only available during the Halloween season.

Riverwalks latest play features U

Divorce is a controversial social issue that many people take seriously. In light of that, Riverwalk Theatre is producing the comedy “Let’s Get a Divorce.” Set in France during the late 19th century, the play depicts how a traditional society copes with the idea of divorce. “It’s about a society based on smoke and mirrors.

Puppets serve up Lies

Meat Puppets Golden Lies (Breaking Records) Arizona’s Meat Puppets continue to throw out albums in their careerlong, and probably frustrating, flirtation with the mainstream. In the early ’90s they hit it big with their single “Backwater” and the late, great Kurt Cobain had them on Nirvana’s “MTV Unplugged” special to play a few of their tunes.

Local theaters and free on-campus sneak previews aren’t the only places to see good movies in a theatrical setting.Thanks to a few on-campus film series, students can enjoy the experience of watching great films without going far from home - and for free.Every Thursday a new film is shown free of charge as part of the American Thought and Language Film Series at 7:30 p.m.

Electra Legend creates another choice for night

“The Electra Legend” tells a story of a young woman, betrayal and murder. Just like the story of “Oedipus” has sparked controversy around the world, “The Electra Legend” has encountered a few problems because of its sexual themes. “There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the play because of the incest the play suggests between Electra and her brother and the all-around sexual theme,” said theater senior Kelly Kaufmann, who plays Clytemnestra, Electra’s mother. The show opened the Department of Theatre’s season last weekend at the Arena Theater in the Auditorium.
