Olin selected to offer 20 minute HIV test

MSU students can receive their HIV test results faster if Olin Health Center agrees to be a pilot site for a new method of testing.Olin Health Center was asked by the Michigan Department of Community Health to participate in a testing program that would provide results in 20 minutes before it is approved for state use.

Board to discuss grant funds, bike safety

MSU's Board of Trustees will discuss Friday ways to strengthen the College of Education via a $5 million grant awarded earlier this semester and review recent findings of the Red Cedar Greenway Master Plan study.The university was one of four institutions to receive the grant from the Carnegie Corp.

Miss Michigan discusses leadership

In front of a small, attentive crowd Monday, the winner of the 2002 Miss Michigan pageant discussed leadership in Conrad Hall.Erin Michelle Moss made her first appearance at MSU, and it all came about with the help of one of her good friends."I'm a friend of Erin's who also competed with her in pageants when we were younger," said Angela Corsi, Panhellenic Council vice president of external relations.

Spartan Soul to hold dance clinic Saturday

The Spartan Soul dance team will hold a three-hour dance clinic on noon Saturday at the IM Sports-Circle for anyone who wants to learn about hip-hop dance style. Spartan Soul will teach attendants one hip-hop and cheer routine, which the participants will perform Sunday afternoon at a showcase for family and friends. The learning session is open to students, faculty and anyone else who would like to attend. Dance experience is not necessary to attend.

Student wins Spartan Idol

A packed crowd at the International Center food court clapped their hands and shouted his name, anticipating his final performance of the evening Saturday. But when the music played, communication junior Evin Martin, was not on stage - he began his performance immersed in the crowd, and slowly made his way front and center. Martin’s renditions of Michael Jackson’s “I Want to Rock With You” and “Sweet Lady” by Tyrese, won the favor of the crowd, as he became the first winner of Spartan Idol: The Making Of An MSU Superstar.

Senior council charity bowl donates $1,400

It was a great day for football as muddy fields and a light breeze accompanied play during the MSU Senior Class Council’s fifth annual Green and White Charity Bowl. Coed teams could sign up for the event by donating $40, which went to the charity of the winning team’s choice. “We raised about $1,400 today,” Senior Class Council President Bill Novotny said.

Spoken words were filled with energy, emotion and rage Saturday night at the Black Poets Society event “Bum Rush the Stage” in the packed Erickson Hall Kiva.The poets blended a slew of topics including civil rights, history and relationships.

Case Hall government supports Rep

Despite receiving negative feedback for comments made about minorities, Case Hall government stood behind its Residence Halls Association representative at Wednesday’s meeting.Adam Raezler recently came under fire from some of his colleagues for comments published in a the group’s newsletter, RHA Today.The comment, paraphrased by LaToya Logan, director of racial ethnic and progressive affairs, read, “Adam Raezler brought it to my attention that he represents the majority of the people in his hall, whom are white, male, heterosexuals, which excludes so-called minorities.”Raezler denies making the comments, and stated in an e-mailed letter sent to a variety of student government bodies that the comment should have read, “The role of the representatives is to represent what the majority of people from your organization deem necessary and proper for and from RHA.”The remarks in question occurred Oct.

Members in 21 of MSU’s 29 Interfraternity Council groups selected new executive officials Wednesday night at Lafayette Square in Brody Complex. “I feel very good about the process,” said Amy Radford, assistant director of Student Life.

Voters rejected Proposal 4

ASMSU can rest easy now.Tireless efforts from several members of MSU’s undergraduate student government culminated Tuesday when Proposal 4 - a proposal they had been opposing since May - failed in the general election.The proposal would redirect about $8.5 billion obtained by the state in a 1998 settlement with tobacco companies.

Donations low for U challenge

MSU could lose more than just a football game when it goes up against Penn State next week.The ninth annual MSU-Penn State Challenge launched Monday, but officials say blood drive donations are lower than expected.“A lot of people haven’t been coming out,” said David Bosman, the challenger’s chairman.The planning committee for the challenge had estimated a collection of 1,960 pints of blood - 300 pints more than last year.Bosman said “Defending Our Title, Defending the Blood Supply,” had a low turnout Monday at Bailey Hall, Communication Arts and Sciences Building and the Red Cross Donor Room, 1800 E.
