Although the Michigan State gymnastics team did not advance to nationals, two Spartan gymnasts qualified for the NCAA Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Sophomore Gabrielle Stephen secured her spot in Fort Worth on the beam after finishing the second round of the Pittsburgh Regionals in a four-way tie for first on the apparatus with a 9.950. In the nation, Stephen is tied 51st nationally with a national qualifying score of 9.895 and a career-high of 9.950.Junior Delanie Harkness will also be joining Stephen in Texas after her 9.925 on the floor solidified her as the highest scorer not already going to nationals with their team. Harkness is also tied 51st nationally on the floor with an NQS of 9.910 and a career-high of 9.950 that she achieved twice this season. This will be the first time competing at nationals for both gymnasts, but with sophomore Skyla Schulte having qualified last year, it will be the first time since 2007-2008 that Michigan State has had gymnasts qualify for nationals in two consecutive years. This will also mark the first time two Spartans will be advancing to nationals since 1997.Harkness and Stephen will be competing in Session I of the NCAA National Championship semifinal round on April 13th at 3 p.m.

After a historic season, the Michigan State gymnastics team will not be advancing to the NCAA National Championship. Similarly to last year, MSU finished the regional final in third place, just behind two of the top teams in the country.

After being just edged out of nationals last season, the No. 10 Michigan State gymnastics team will be heading into the NCAA Pittsburgh Regionals looking to complete some unfinished business.The Spartans needed to place in the top two at the Seattle Regionals in 2022, and they laid everything on the floor. MSU set a program record during the regional final with a score of 197.650, but Utah and Alabama were able to edge out the Spartans to move on to nationals. Head Coach Mike Rowe said that the team is feeling more confident going into regionals this year than they were last year. “Along through the season — breaking the (program) record, all-around records, individual event scores and records — that kind of thing just keeps building their confidence,” Rowe said. “I think it's confirming to them that we're doing something right … I think they really believe in our process and our philosophy, and they're comfortable that it can take them to the next level.” This year, the Spartans will be taking on California, Western Michigan and West Virginia in the first session of the semifinal round of the Pittsburgh regionals.The second session will see performances from Maryland, Florida, Arizona State and Penn State. The top two teams form each session will move onto the regional finals on Sunday afternoon.

Gabrielle Stephen had an incredible season last year, and she just keeps improving. As a freshman, Stephen was named Big Ten freshman of the week on three separate occasions and landed a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team at the end of the regular season. These accolades were well deserved, as Stephen was putting up amazing numbers. Even after the huge year she had, Stephen's skills and scores have still been consistently improving throughout her second season. Before the start of the season, the sophomore was named as a Big Ten Gymnast to watch and she has certainly lived up to the title.Last year, Stephen was averaging mid to low 9.700 scores on bars, beam and floor with floor being her lowest scoring event throughout the course of her freshman season. Her scores are sitting consistently higher this year—giving her average scores above 9.800 on every apparatus. Floor went from being Stephen’s worst average scoring event at a 9.716 to her best with a 9.893.It has not just been more consistent scoring that has improved Stephen’s averages, but also the career-highs she has been setting recently. Stephen tied her career high 9.950 on vault and set massive new career high 9.975s on both the uneven bars and on floor. Despite her consistent incredible performances, Stephen said that she can get really stressed out before competing—especially on the balance beam. “I find it hard to watch my teammates in front of me,” Stephen said. “So, I'm just listening in the background, listening to the team and when everyone's cheering — I'm like, oh, that's a good noise. I like to hear that. I can look at the big screen, but I can't watch it.”

Nikki Smith is only a freshman, but you would not be able to tell by the way she competes. Smith performs with the grace, power and poise that you would expect from someone well beyond her years, but the 18-year-old has had her fair share of practice on national stages. Before her time at Michigan State, Smith competed in the Nastia Liukin Cup. The Nastia Liukin Cup is a national competition for the nation's top junior elite gymnasts.Smith competed in the Nastia Liukin Cup in 2020, 2021 and 2022 where she placed 10th, 5th and tied for first place respectively in the all-around. When the freshman reflected back on her near-life-long gymnastics career, the moment that she first qualified for the Nastia Liukin Cup stuck out to her as a highlight. “I like being on TV," Smith said. "It was such a big crowd, and it just made me want to just keep doing it (gymnastics). I just love it.” Smith said that the Nastia Liukin Cup being on TV and being such a large-scale competition was a huge piece in calming her nerves moving onto collegiate gymnastics.
