Three MSU players were selected Tuesday in day two of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Junior third baseman Torsten Boss was the first Spartan off the board as he was chosen with the fourth pick in the eighth round, No. 252 overall, by the Baltimore Orioles. Boss is coming off of a third-team All-Big Ten junior year following a sophomore season that earned him first-team honors. He finished the season with a .302 batting average, five homers and a team-high 43 RBI.
In the 13th round, junior Ryan Jones became the highest drafted Spartan second baseman in history when he was selected No. 418 overall by the San Francisco Giants. Jones led the Spartans in total hits, doubles and runs scored while batting .352 on the year, which was good enough for a second-team All-Big Ten selection.
Jones and Boss started all 60 games for MSU in 2012.
One round after Jones, senior pitcher Tony Bucciferro was drafted No. 441 overall to the Chicago White Sox. A third-team All-Big Ten performer in 2012 as the Spartans’ Friday starter, Bucciferro finished with a 6-4 record and a 3.07 ERA, including two complete games.
The draft will resume tomorrow at noon with rounds 16-40 and can be seen live on MLB.com.
