It was a similar scene for the MSU hockey team heading into the third and final period in the third place game of the Great Lakes Invitational, or GLI. The Spartans were staring at a 4-1 deficit with just 20 minutes of game time left against in-state rival University of Michigan. But a furious comeback attempt from the Spartans would have them typing it up four goals apiece with just 2:10 left, eventually falling in overtime to the Wolverines, 5-4.

Under the countless banners hanging from the rafts along with the 'Hockeytown' moniker etched into center ice, historic Joe Louis Arena was the site of the 52nd edition of the Great Lakes Invitational, or GLI. The MSU hockey team graced the rink as the icers faced off against No. 16 Western Michigan, ultimately falling to the Broncos in a blowout, 4-1.

After a hearty effort to keep No. 11 Minnesota (9-5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) without a power play goal the previous night, the opposite came true for the MSU hockey team (4-8-1, 0-2 Big Ten) in its game two defeat to the Golden Gophers, 4-2. Special teams would ultimately be the difference in the match with the Spartans faltering on its three man-advantage opportunities.

In the first period of game one of the MSU hockey team’s stunning series against then-No. 5 University of North Dakota, redshirt-freshman defenseman Jerad Rosburg quieted down the hostile crowd of Ralph Engelstad Arena with two simple shots on goals. Both found the back of the net, giving the Spartans an early lead they did not relinquish.

On a surprisingly warm November evening, the MSU hockey team hosted in-state rival Ferris State University in game one of the home-and-home series at Munn Ice Arena. There, the Bulldogs came out victorious in a hard-fought, physical match, 4-1, dropping the Spartans' record to 2-6 overall.
