—Michigan State and defensive line coach Ron Burton have parted ways after nine seasons.
“As I look for new opportunities, I wanted to let you know that East Lansing and Michigan State will always hold a special place in my hear," Burton said via Twitter. "I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
Burton was one of the few members of former head coach Mark Dantonio’s coaching staff retained after MSU Head Coach Mel Tucker was hired as head coach in 2020. A 29-year coaching veteran, he joined the program in 2013 and immediately made an impact producing a consistently strong defensive line.
Burton is the only coach to win the FootballScoop National Defensive Line Coach of the Year Award twice, first in 2013 and second in 2018 and has manufactured two NFL Draft selections: Shilique Calhoun in 2016 and Malik McDowell in 2017.
MSU made the hiring of pass rush specialist Brandon Jordan, a former highly touted NFL trainer, official on Saturday and hired Effrem Reed as the new running backs coach shortly after the Peach Bowl. The Spartans now have another hole to fill with Burton's departure.
