The Big Ten has released its Men’s and Women’s Golfers to Watch List for the 2020-21 golf season, and MSU is well represented on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Six golfers from MSU were named to the list, three men and three women.

The MSU men’s golfers who received the preseason award include seniors James Piot and Andrew Walker and junior Troy Taylor II.

Piot is coming off a strong 2019-20 season where he took home four top-10 finishes in tournaments, including two of them being first-place finishes at the Island Resort and Inverness Intercollegiate tournaments.

Taylor is coming off a season where he took home two top-10 finishes and three in the top 20, including a tie for eight place at the Island Resort Intercollegiate and a tie for ninth place at the Fighting Irish Classic.

Walker finished his 2019-20 season with a top-10 finish at the Challenge at Concession event.

The three MSU women’s golfers who made the list include juniors Haylin Harris and Valery Plata and senior Yurika Tanida.

Harris ended last season with three top-15 place finishes, including a season-high tie for sixth place at the Mary Fossum Invitational.

Plata had one of the strongest 209-20 seasons out of the Spartan golfers. She most notably had three top-five finishes, which include winning the events against the University of Florida and the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational and getting a tie for second place at the Mary Fossum Invitational.

Tanida also is one of the most promising returning Spartans. She placed in the top 15 of five events last season. Among these were three top-five finishes in which she tied for fourth at the Mary Fossum and Glass City Invitationals and tied for second at the UCF Challenge.

The 2020-21 season is looking bright for the MSU golf program.

Both the men’s and women’s teams begin their seasons Jan. 31 as the men head to Palm Coast, Florida to take on Northwestern, and the women head to Orlando, Florida to participate in the UCF Challenge.
