MSU professor hones acting skills on stage, on the small screen

October 13, 2014

Assistant Professor of Media Acting Mark Colson is a busy guy — not only is he a professor here at MSU, but he has also been pursuing a professional acting career.

Colson has been playing — and will continue to play — the lead role in the Williamston Theatre production ‘The Gravedigger – A Frankenstein Story.

The show has been running since Sept. 25 and will go until Nov. 2. Show times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 3 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Williamston Theatre is located in downtown Williamston, MI.

Colson’s character is a gravedigger who has been isolated and living alone for a long time. Colson describes the character as ‘closed off’ and having his own demon that he’s trying to deal with.

Colson, who was called in during the summer to audition for the role, is in his fourth year as a professor here at MSU. He teaches classes that specialize in on-camera acting and media studies.

Colson has had various roles on television shows including Bones, Parks and Recreation, Justified and AMC’s Low Winter Sun. He cites the university wanting him to continue pursuing his acting career as one the reasons he took the job here.

“I also think it gives me more credibility in the classroom with my students,” Colson said.
