RHA Movie Offices to return next week

October 24, 2012

Students hoping to relax after midterm exams will be able to watch a movie in their dorm rooms next week thanks to the Residence Halls Association, or RHA.

The RHA Movie Office announced at the RHA General Assembly meeting Wednesday night they have cleared up previous technological issues with their rental system and will have a week of grand reopenings starting Monday.

The RHA Movie Offices has five different on-campus locations where on-campus students can rent movies for free.

“It’s been a process and there have been bumps, but in the end this will be a huge message from the RHA Movie Offices … We want to give the best service possible to (students),” Director of Movie Offices Greg Rokisky said.

The reopening originally was scheduled for September but had to be pushed back after Rokisky realized the rental system was too outdated to be used.

Last academic year, the system experienced frequent failures that caused the movie offices to often be closed.

Rokisky said the new system will be entirely conducted on new iPads, which should be purchased and available at the first reopening Monday. He said the new “My Movies” system on the iPads will allow the offices to track inventory, popular movies and save time and effort on the part of RHA and movie office workers.

Rokisky said the grand reopening will extend during the entire week from Monday to Nov. 2, with the first Re-Opening taking place at the Gilchrist Hall movie office during special office hours from 5-11 p.m.

The rest of the movie offices will reopen as follows:
The Mason Hall movie office will reopen on Tuesday.
The Brody Hall movie office will reopen on Wednesday.
The Akers Hall movie office will reopen on Thursday.
The Holden Hall movie office will reopen on Friday.

Regular business hours will be announced next week.

“It’s the little TLC that (the offices) deserve and what it needs to get going,” Rokisky said, adding he believes this improved version of the movie offices will be more sustainable.

Rokisky said there will be free candy and popcorn provided at the reopenings as well as a chance to enter a raffle for a basket of prizes. He said the grand reopening will have a Halloween movie night theme.

“(The movie office system) is something I think that RHA has struggled with in the past but I’m excited to see us create a sustainable program for future Spartans,” RHA President Kelcey Gapske said of the newly improved movie offices.

Also at the meeting, Director of Special Events Rodney James announced there will be an RHA-sponsored concert Nov. 17 at the Pasant Theatre in Wharton Center, although he was unable to confirm who the artist will be.

In a previous interview, Director of Public Relations Abigail Bhattacharyya said the group had a previous big-name artist lined up who fell through. She would not say who the original artist was.
RHA also passed a bill at Wednesday’s meeting, creating a new representative position for the Residence Education Staff Council.

The newly formed council was developed at the beginning of this academic year to give more of a voice to resident assistants, or RAs, and community coordinators within the residence halls.
Gapske said the group will not having any voting privileges in RHA but rather will serve as a liaison between the two groups.
