No further info released about suspended players

September 19, 2012

No new information has been released in regards to the two MSU women’s basketball players who have been suspended for the first nine games of the 2012-13 season.

Sophomore guard Kiana Johnson and redshirt freshman forward Akyah Taylor were suspended after NCAA guidelines “related to the receipt of extra benefits” were violated.

Jim Donatelli, MSU’s assistant athletic communications director, said there was nothing new and that there probably won’t be any new information released in the near future.

He added the players are being protected and that any ramifications handed down come from the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

“Both Kiana and Akyah are good student-athletes that made a bad decision this summer,” MSU women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant said in a statement earlier this week. “They will accept the consequences for their actions. We will move forward as a program.”

Both players are eligible to return to action Dec. 16 against IPFW.
