Softball opens Big Ten season at Purdue this weekend

March 22, 2012

A week removed from a strong showing at the Hoosier Classic, the MSU softball team is ready to open the Big Ten season with a three-game weekend series against Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Spartans (10-16) have battled through a strong nonconference schedule and already have faced several elite teams in then-No. 1 Florida, then-No. 25 Louisville, then-No. 24 Auburn and then-No. 11 Stanford.

Purdue comes into the matchup touting a 15-9 record and is coming off a two-win, two-loss weekend in the Bayer Cropscience Classic.

The Spartans have won four of the last five over the Boilermakers and are riding a three-game winning streak into West Lafayette, Ind.

Redshirt freshman utility Stephanie Sanders likely will be the key for the Spartans, looking to build momentum off of a two-homerun, seven-run, four-game series in which she batted .417 and notched MSU’s first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors this season.

The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Purdue’s Varsity Softball Complex, followed by the second scheduled for 3 p.m. The final game of the series will take place Sunday at 1 p.m.
