Women's basketball tops Colorado State, 72-45, in Caribbean Classic

December 21, 2011

The MSU Women’s Basketball team has gotten away from the cold weather in East Lansing to spend their winter break in Cancun, Mexico as the team participates in the Caribbean Classic tournament this week.

The trip got off to a good start on Tuesday when the Spartans (8-4) knocked off Colorado State (3-8) in a dominant 72-45 victory.

It was the first meeting all-time between the two schools, and MSU used tenacious defense and balanced scoring to gain an early lead they never relinquished.

Freshman center Becca Mills led MSU with 11 points, and senior guard Porschè Poole added 10 points for the Spartans.

MSU started the game on an 11-2 run with junior guard Jasmine Thomas serving as the catalyst — scoring five points during the run. Thomas finished with nine points, three steals and a game-high five assists.

With 8:09 to go in the first half, the Spartans scored nine unanswered points to extend their lead to 16 points.

MSU maintained and expanded on the lead throughout the game, growing to as much as a 29-point lead, with Colorado State never getting closer than 12 points.

The Caribbean Classic continues Wednesday when MSU takes on Pittsburgh (6-5) at 3:30 p.m.
