Women's basketball opens season in Iona Tournament

November 10, 2011

While the MSU men’s basketball team is preparing for its first game of the season on the USS Carl Vinson, another group of Spartans will open its season on the court.

The women’s basketball team will start its season off in the Iona Tournament, playing its first game against Villanova at 1:45 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans will follow that game up by playing either Iona, or North Carolina A&T.

Head coach Suzy Merchant is entering her fifth season with the Spartans, who are coming off the first outright Big Ten Championship in program history. The Spartans are led by reigning Big Ten defensive player of the year, senior forward Lykendra Johnson.

In their two exhibition matches, the Spartans have outscored opponents 169-54. Both games were highlighted by quick starts from the Green and White, allowing them to build a substantial lead.

However, despite two strong performances, MSU will have to ramp up the intensity now that the games will count against its record.

Those wishing to follow the Villanova game can listen to it live on WJIM 1240 AM, or follow Gametracker at msuspartans.com
