Spartans earn All-Big Ten honors

November 10, 2010

Laura Heyboer

Women’s soccer junior forward Laura Heyboer and junior goalkeeper Jill Flietstra were awarded First Team All-Big Ten Conference honors for their performances on the pitch this season, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Heyboer finished the season tied for second in the conference with 10 goals and one goal away from becoming MSU’s all-time leading scorer. She now has been a member of the All-Big Ten First Team each of her three years at MSU.

The honor comes as Flietstra’s first, who had a conference-leading 11 shutouts. Flietstra also finished third in the conference with 85 saves and first in saves per game.

Two defenders also were selected as All-Big Ten players. Junior Katelin Chaklos was named Second Team All-Big Ten and Kelsey Mullen was selected to the All-Freshman Team for the lockdown defense they played all season. Flietstra said many times during the season that without her defense the shutouts would not have been possible.

Rounding down the list is senior defender Courtney Shegos, who was selected for a Sportsmanship Award. She finishes her career at MSU with a 23-2-5 record at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Spartans (9-6-4 overall, 3-4-3 Big Ten) were left off the list of 2010 NCAA Tournament teams when they were announced Monday.
