Men's soccer players earn All-Big Ten honors

November 14, 2010

In another edition of The State News sports podcast, the sports desk discusses a variety of MSU sports while football is on a bye week. Along with sports editor Chris Vannini, football reporter Jeremy Warnemuende discusses the No. 2 men’s basketball team, which beat Eastern Michigan, 96-66, on Friday at Breslin Center.

Men’s soccer and ice hockey reporter Pat Evans talks about the soccer team’s chances of making the NCAA Tournament and the hockey team’s inability to hold a lead. Meanwhile, field hockey and volleyball reporter Michelle Martinelli discusses the future of the field hockey team after the Spartans fell in overtime to Virginia, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and also touches on the MSU volleyball team, which is in the home stretch of its season.

Seven MSU men’s soccer players were selected to All-Big Ten Teams or earned awards following the team’s 11-7-1 regular season.

Two seniors — defender Colin Givens and midfielder Spencer Thompson — were named to the All-Big Ten First Team. The selection is Thompson’s second consecutive, and Givens’ first — after an All-Big Ten Second Team selection last year.

Junior forward Domenic Barone, sophomore defender Kevin Cope and senior goalie Avery Steinlage were selected to the All-Big Ten Second Team. Barone is tied for the team lead with eight goals. Last year’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year and member of the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, Cope made his way onto the second team. After being a first-team pick two years in a row, Steinlage was selected to the second team.

Freshman midfielder Josh Barens was named to the All-Freshman Team. Barens started 17 of the team’s 18 games and collected two assists.

Senior midfielder Jeff Ricondo was named MSU’s Sportsmanship Award honoree for displaying leadership and sportsmanship.

MSU lost to Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament and will await the NCAA Tournament selection.
