Fietstra earns another Big Ten honor

October 18, 2010

MSU women’s soccer goalkeeper Jill Flietstra is starting to get greedy with her Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The junior goalkeeper took home her third award of the season this week, the conference office announced Monday.

Flietstra posted back-to-back shutouts this weekend. The first came on Thursday at Oakland, 2-0, and the second was Sunday at home against Northwestern, 1-0.

With 11 shutouts, the Hudsonville, Mich., native is now one shutout away from tying for the MSU single-season shutout record, currently held by former Spartan keeper Nicole Galus.

Flietstra currently is on a five-game shutout streak and has allowed just one goal in her past nine games.

In each of the Spartans’ nine wins and two draws, not a single goal has been allowed by the Spartans. In seven games Flietstra has not let one goal slip by in front of the home crowd at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field.

Flietstra will have five regular season games left to try and tie the record, including two this weekend, one at Wisconsin and the other at Minnesota.
