Men's soccer sweeps Big East opponents

September 19, 2010

The No. 19 MSU men’s soccer team swept its two games in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge against Marquette and Notre Dame this weekend.

The Spartans (5-1) stopped several Marquette scoring opportunities in the second half and held onto a 1-0 lead Friday evening at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field.

MSU’s lone goal came in the middle of the second half when junior midfielder Cyrus Saydee netted his first goal of the season.

Head coach Damon Rensing said he was happy with the way the team performed, despite a few issues after Marquette adjusted its strategy.

“We had a really good rhythm and then they dropped off and had numbers behind the ball and they really clogged the middle and that made it difficult,” Rensing said. “We lost a little patience and in soccer that gets a little frustrating. All in all we stayed patient and got a good goal from Cyrus.”

The team traveled to Notre Dame on Sunday and came away with a 2-0 win on two goals from junior forward Domenic Barone.

Saydee and freshman defender Josh Barens assisted on Barone’s goals, his second and third of the season.

Senior goalie Avery Steinlage tallied his first two shutouts of the season with seven saves against Marquette and six in the tilt with Notre Dame.
