Golfing nine on the indoor challenge

March 29, 2010

Workers at Burcham Hills Retirement Community rolled out the green carpet as residents and staff waited for their tee time Friday.

“(Residents) always say they can’t golf anymore,” said recreational coordinator Alexis Schneider, who planned the indoor golf challenge.

“It’s just giving them that easier challenge for them to be able to feel successful again and bring back those memories of being
able to be out on the golf course and get excited for spring to come.”

Workers at Burcham Hills Retirement Community rolled out the green carpet as residents and staff waited for their tee time Friday.

“(Residents) always say they can’t golf anymore,” said recreational coordinator Alexis Schneider, who planned the indoor golf challenge. “It’s just giving them that easier challenge for them to be able to feel successful again and bring back those memories of being able to be out on the golf course and get excited for spring to come.”

The challenge was the first of its kind hosted by Burcham Hills and was designed to be a way to welcome spring, Schneider said.

The indoor, nine-hole miniature golf course was set up in the downstairs of the center, with contests for best dressed, best and worst scores and more.

Resident Doris Anderson, who had a score that she estimated to be in the upper 20s, was impressed by the skill of the other residents.

“The others, I can’t believe. Nine holes, and there were (scores of) 16, 17 some of them,” Anderson said. “Especially this kind of thing where they test your patience. You think you are hitting it so neatly and it hits all of those obstacles.”
