Ron Sichau directed cupid’s arrow at his wife of 25 years, but this year it was from a completely different angle. Sichau chose the path of public embarrassment for his wife Denise, ordering a singing valentine to be presented to her at work.
Chari Smith, Peggy Isham, Merry Lu Jordan and Elizabeth Johnson, all members of the Water Wonderland Chorus of Sweet Adeline, made the pickup quartet that delivered her message as she was cutting the hair of a client at Hip Hop Hair & Nails in DeWitt where she works.
“You have got to be kidding me,” was Sichau’s first response to the foursome. “This is so not my husband.”
The quartet, Sound Waves, delivered 10 sing-a-grams Friday throughout the day, hopping from one home or business to another until nearly 7 p.m.
Elizabeth Johnson, a member of the quartet and head of marketing for the chorus, thinks the popularity of their valentines is due to the unique nature of the gift.
“You can’t go to a store and buy a singing valentine,” Johnson said. “You’ve got live human beings interacting with you. People just love it.”
In the case of the Sichaus, this Valentine’s Day might have started a war instead.
“I’m waiting for the payback quite honestly,” Sichau said of his wife’s reaction. “She’ll get me back, somehow.”
