The MSU women’s soccer team lost 1-0 in overtime to Santa Clara Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, ending the Spartans season.
MSU finishes 11-5-4 overall, while Santa Clara improves to 15-2-2 and advances to the second round, where it will play the winner of Oklahoma State and Southern California at 7 p.m. Sunday.
After battling through a scoreless 90 minutes, the Spartans and Broncos — seeded No. 4 in the Stanford bracket — moved on to overtime, which lasted a little more than a minute. At the 1:08 minute mark of overtime, Santa Clara’s Jenny LaPonte found Anessa Patton, who got the ball past MSU sophomore goalkeeper Jill Flietstra at the far post to give Santa Clara the win.
The Broncos outshot the Spartans 26-3, including a first half which saw MSU record zero shots.
Flietstra finished with nine saves, while junior defender Samantha Cook (56th minute), freshman midfielder/defender Kelsey Kassab (62nd minute) and freshman forward Olivia Stander (79th minute) accounted for MSU’s three shots.
