SN decor: Freshman creates bachelor pad with friends' help

November 24, 2008

Advertising freshman Nick Halfhill didn’t want his first college apartment to be ordinary. So he gathered some friends, went shopping and did the best he could.

The result?

A mix of old-school themes and new-school technology, Halfhill’s apartment would appeal to just about any guy on campus.

Advertising freshman Nick Halfhill didn’t want his first college apartment to be ordinary. So he gathered some friends, went shopping and did the best he could.

The State News sat down with Halfhill to find out how he turned his limited materials and space into the ideal bachelor pad.

The State News How did you decorate your room when you moved in this fall?

Nick Halfhill Me and my best friend, Hannah, went shopping this summer, and just went crazy. We bought a bunch of stuff. We wanted to make it cozy and homey, so when you walk into it you weren’t walking into a normal college bedroom.

SN What’s your theme?

NH I guess the theme was color. I have a big picture of me and all my best friends (on the shelf), the wood is all dark wood — a really dark black and brown. The light is a soft light. We were working with a classic, polo theme. An old but new theme, I guess.

SN You’ve got a unique stick on the shelf above your desk. Where’d you find that?

NH I got the stick from Hawk Island (County) Park. I’m a big outdoors guy, and we always go hiking and stuff, and there’s this park around Hawk Island with this big lake I go running around. My roommates will go fishing while I’m running. Well, there’s a bunch of these crazy vines that wrap around the trees, and all the sticks are spiral like a helix. I’ve never seen it before anywhere else.

SN The paper lanterns and the halogen lights really work well with the dark wood furniture. How’d you match those two together?

NH When we were in IKEA, we found a bunch of (lights). They had a kind of mock-up room. I found these halogen lights under the big shelf and thought, ‘What can I do to manipulate them to make actual shapes on the wall?’ So there’s an actual halo on the wall.

SN The flat-screen TV above your desk is awesome, especially with the laptop right under it. How did you think of that setup?

NH The computer and the TV both kind of go with each other. I can do all my homework up here (on the TV) or go between the two. It’s good because I’m kind of going blind. I had to get glasses. But yeah, I can just sit here, do homework on the top screen, watch a movie on the bottom, or vice versa. Facebook is always on one of the screens, so it’s a little distracting.

SN The desk itself is really big. Do you spend a lot of time here?

NH I definitely spend a lot of my homework time here. And I eat over here because the TV is right here and the living room is always kind of a mess.

SN The mirror goes perfect with the rest of the room. Did you have that before you moved in, or did you find that while room-shopping?

NH We found that when we were shopping.

It was one of the more expensive pieces in the room, but (Hannah and I) were like ‘We have to get this.’ It fits perfect with the theme of room, being thick, strong. It was one of those things where we had to give up some things I liked, but had to keep the mirror because it was really cool. It was only $100. The room itself is under $500, and there’s a bunch of crap in the room.

SN Your bedspread is pretty elaborate. It looks expensive — is it?

NH Not really. The bedspread and the sheets are all stuff that the neighbor girls helped me get. There’s a bed skirt around it, too, because they insisted I put something down there. It was just steel bars (originally). And after all the crap we got for the room, they thought it was ridiculous that I was just going to have a big steel thing sticking out. They showed me how to iron, and all that stuff, and put it down there for me.
