Seniors will leave special legacy behind

Kristi Jourdan

The seniors on the MSU hockey team can be trusted. When they say they’re going to do something — they do it.

Defeat No. 1 Michigan at Yost Ice Arena? Check.

Finally win against Western Michigan at Lawson Ice Arena? You bet.

Be victorious against U-M in front of an almost sold-out home crowd at Munn Ice Arena? No problem.

There’s a lot to be said for this group of leaders who deliver results as promised. Not only does it reflect well on MSU head coach Rick Comley, the MSU hockey program and the players themselves, it sets a wonderful precedent for the team’s upcoming leaders.

The seniors are laying out nearly perfect blueprints for junior forwards Tim Kennedy, Justin Abdelkader and Tim Crowder and junior goaltender Jeff Lerg to continue the program’s success — which already has brought our beloved university last year’s national title.

Setting their standards as high as these guys have can only make future MSU hockey teams work just as hard if not harder to maintain that consistent level of play.

And the work ethic and leadership abilities of these guys is admirable.

It’s that kind of attitude and dedication that can carry a national title from one year to the next.

The only goal this group hasn’t accomplished is winning at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

While the Joe must be cursed, since the Spartans have lost three straight times they’ve appeared there, with one recent loss coming from U-M, at least the team is 2-1-1 this season against that school down the road.

Friday’s 7:05 p.m. game at Munn against Bowling Green will be the final time the seniors skate on home ice during the regular season.

It certainly will be a bittersweet moment for all of us.

It will be difficult for this team to graduate this group of seniors whose unique play can never be duplicated but always will be appreciated.

Fans have watched them score goals, smear opponents into the boards, sit in the penalty box for crimes they might or might not have committed on the ice, break sticks, lose an edge and fall on the ice.

But no matter what they’ve done, the seniors have done it with grace, respect and pride.

Thank you to senior captain Bryan Lerg, Chris Mueller, Daniel Vukovic, Zak McClellan and Jeff Dunne for doing everything that was asked of you.

And if it just couldn’t be accomplished, for whatever reason, thank you for owning up to that, accepting your responsibilities and being held accountable for your play.

Regardless whether or not you bring home a second consecutive national title, you’ve made it an absolute pleasure to watch Spartans hockey.

(And a special thanks to Zac and the Macs for continuously playing Munn. Hopefully, I’ll catch the European tour.)
