Loss leaves Spartans out of postseason

May 21, 2007

Despite jumping out to a 7-0 lead, the MSU baseball team fell to Illinois 8-7, Sunday afternoon at Illinois Field, putting an end to the Spartans' hopes of playing in the postseason Big Ten Tournament.

MSU (25-26 overall, 15-16 Big Ten) needed to defeat Illinois or have Penn State defeat Ohio State, neither of which happened.

Junior shortstop Brandon Doherty went 3-5 on the day Sunday, including a solo home run in the third inning that put MSU up 3-0. The Spartans went on to score all seven of their runs in the first five innings of the game. However, Illinois put together eight runs within three innings that was enough to earn them a bid into the Big Ten Tournament.

Junior Ryan MacFarlane started the game for the Spartans allowing five runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Junior Tony Clausen (1-1) took the loss for the Spartans and Jake Toohey (2-1) recorded the win for the Fighting Illini.
