No. 68 Indiana downs No. 55 men's tennis 11 athletes bring home gold at Spartan Open

The No. 55 MSU men's tennis squad suffered a 6-1 upset to No. 68 Indiana. The Spartans (14-10 overall, 1-5 Big Ten) lost each doubles match and five of six singles matches in the defeat.

MSU's No. 77-ranked junior Andrew Formanczyk provided a bright spot as he fought to an upset of his own, downing the No. 60 Jakub Praibis, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles match.

The Hoosiers improve to 9-8, 3-2 with the win.

The Spartans host their final regular season matches this weekend, facing off against No. 1 Illinois on Saturday and Purdue on Sunday.

A total of 11 Spartans took home top honors at the men's and women's track and field 2004 Spartan Open, held Saturday.

On the women's team, seniors Michelle Carson, Sarah Adelaine and Sherita Williams and freshmen Cynetheia Rooks and Melinda Buckmaster won titles during the event, which featured 12 teams.

Carson posted a meet-best time of 10:22.92 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, nearly a full minute ahead of the runner-up competitor, while Adelaine took both the hammer and shot put titles, with throws of 182'1" and 48'7", respectively.

Williams' leaps of 19'6" and 40'4" were good for first in both the long jump and triple jump, respectively, while Rooks crossed the finish line in 24.24 to take the 200-meter dash title.

Buckmaster won the javelin event with a 133'.09" toss.

Senior Steve Manz, juniors Julien Williams, John Karanja and Nathan Egger and sophomores Brad Gebauer and Carlos Alexander each finished first in their events for the men's team.

Manz took home his third shot put title this year with a toss of 60'3 3/4", while Williams jumped 23'10" to place first in the long jump. Karanja finished the 400-meter hurdles in 54.85 for the title, and Egger's time of 14:54.35 was best in the 5000-meter run.

Gebauer and Alexander rounded out the top spots for MSU in the pole vault (16'4 3/4") and 200-meter dash (21.78), respectively.

Both MSU squads travel to Walnut, Calif., this weekend to compete in the Mt. Sac Multi.
