Top 10: Cool-down songs for Southern California

November 3, 2003

The raging inferno known as the California wildfires has captivated the interest of the nation. Some have loved ones whose homes have been torched by the massive flames. So, this is a list of songs of everything cold - whether it be title, lyrics or artist, these picks should help people in the Golden State think cool thoughts.

10. "Winter Wonderland," pick your artist: For perhaps the first time in recent history, Californians are begging for cold weather. Snow-draped palm trees and the opportunity to see Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger in a Santa hat are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

9. "I Wish It Would Rain Down," Phil Collins: Everyone can feel it calling in the air tonight, but it's gonna take a lot more rain than a light coastal Pacific mist to extinguish these flames. So Collins is schmaltzy, but everyone out west is hoping Mother Nature will dump a California-sized tsunami on the Golden State's arse.

8. "Wind Beneath My Wings," Bette Midler: SoCal needs more wind than M.C. Hammer's pants - and that's a whole lot of air. If the rain won't come in massive doses, then we might have to rely on gale-force winds to return California to normality.

7. "Cold As Ice," Foreigner: It needs to get cold out there. So cold that it freezes my body so I might come back in the year 3000 and meet up with a robot named Bender, a cyclops named Leela and some snot-nosed punk named Fry. Didn't get this one? It figures.

6. "Ice Ice Baby," Vanilla Ice: I really didn't want to get him on another list of mine, but it seemed too good to pass up. It's nice that Ice and Foreigner are situated next to each other on this list. Wouldn't it be wicked-weird if Foreigner teamed up with Vanilla Ice? You'd probably get something such as the "Hot-Blooded Ninja Rap."

5. "Splish Splash," Bobby Darin: It sure would be nice to just jump in a tub or pool down there, eh? The thought of being able to relax in a tub, without fear of fires gobbling up your house like E.T. to Reese's Pieces, truly is a wonderful thought.

4. "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," B.J. Thomas: And by "head," I mean "wildfires."

3. "Waterfalls," TLC: The music video was one of the most expensive ever made for its time. And any time a good thought can include both water and a trio of sexy vixens, it's definitely a good thing.

2. "Only Happy When It Rains," Garbage: You'd be hard pressed right now to find happy faces near San Diego. But that would all change if that big faucet in the sky would start leaking immensely.

1. "November Rain," Guns N' Roses: Duh - it fits so perfectly, as one of my co-workers pointed out. California, Axl Rose weeps for you.
