Spartans closer to shedding green and white for red, white and blue

June 2, 2003

Hoop dreams for three members of the MSU men's basketball team are closer to coming true following a weekend tryout at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Junior guard Chris Hill was named as a finalist, one of 17, to the Pan Am Games, which will compete Aug. 2-6 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Sophomore forward Paul Davis and sophomore guard Maurice Ager also were named to the list of finalists for the Junior World Championships, which will be held July 10-20 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

"I was definitely a little bit nervous, but when I heard my name I was excited more than anything to possibly play for my country," Hill said through a written statement.

If Hill makes the final cut during the July 21-29 training camp in Orlando, Fla., he'll join fellow Spartan Tom Izzo, who will coach the 12-man roster.

"I hope the men that were chosen go back and work hard individually for the next three to four weeks so they are all ready to get going when we arrive in Orlando," Izzo said through a written statement.
