October 31, 2002

Junior defensive end Greg Taplin has been suspended for one game for violating team rules and will not dress for the Spartans’ contest against No. 15 Michigan at 12:05 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Stadium, according to MSU Sports Information.

Taplin is the second MSU starter to be suspended within the a week. Junior quarterback Jeff Smoker was suspended indefinitely on Oct. 24 also for violating unspecified team rules. He missed last Saturday’s game against Wisconsin and will miss the Michigan game, too.

Taplin started six of MSU’s eight games this season and tallied 27 tackles. Head coach Bobby Williams will announce his replacement Saturday before the start of the game.

The top candidates to replace him are sophomore defensive linemen Matthias Askew and Darrell Hamilton.
