The MSU Board of Trustees will vote to approve a one-year contract extension for mens basketball head coach Tom Izzo at its meeting Friday.
The extension would keep Izzo at the helm of the Spartan program until June 30, 2009.
And although the board must vote to make the extension official, trustee David Porteous said the deal is as good as done.
He does a great job, and were fortunate at MSU to have Tom Izzo, Porteous said. No matter where I go, anywhere in the country or anywhere in the world, people ask about Izzo and tell me how much they admire him and admire the program at MSU.
When its on the agenda that hes getting a contract extended, thats an easy vote, a pleasure for us.
Izzo received a seven-year rolling contract in November, with an annual income of $1.3 million.
With a rolling deal, the number of years on the contract always stays the same. This is the first extension to his new contract.
Izzo began coaching the Spartans in 1994 after working as an assistant for 11 years under former coach Jud Heathcote. Now he is widely considered one of the premier college coaches.
He has led the Spartans to three back-to-back Final Fours, the 2000 NCAA National Championship and four regular-season Big Ten Championships.
Last year, Izzos team lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to North Carolina State and was one win from tying four teams for a share of the Big Ten title.
It also saw the nations longest home-winning streak end at 53 when it lost to Wisconsin at Breslin Center.
His career record at MSU is 167-65.
