With an offensive attack never seen before in MSU football history, the Spartans rolled to a 44-35 victory over Fresno State in the Silicon Valley Football Classic.

The Spartans set MSU bowl game records with 44 points, 586 total net yards, 376 net yards passing and 210 net yards rushing.

“We had a great game plan going into the game,” said sophomore quarterback Jeff Smoker, who threw for an MSU bowl record 376 yards. “We had the time to work with it, try different things and we executed really well today.”

MSU exploded to a 37-21 halftime lead - including an MSU bowl record 20 second quarter points - behind a well balance attack.

As the game rolled on, individual bowl records continued to crumble as sophomore receiver Charles Rogers tallied 270 yards receiving and junior running back T.J. Duckett rumbled for 184 rushing yards.

“It was a very, very solid performance by this football team,” said MSU head coach Bobby Williams. “I was really proud of the way we competed today; proud of the way the coaches had the players prepared in all three phases of the game.”
