Izzo needs Torbert to fill holes on team

Kelvin Torbert, last year’s Mr. Basketball, is now a freshman guard from Flint. Head coach Tom Izzo said he expects Torbert to step up and play an important role on the MSU basketball team —

True, Michael Jordan didn’t return to basketball to play for the Spartans. But Big Ten defenders will be gunning for their own legend wearing No. 23.

Kelvin Torbert, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Flint Northern High and arguably the nation’s top high school player last year, will try to step in where former Spartan guard and Golden State Warrior Jason Richardson left off.

And just as Wizards’ head coach Doug Collins said Jordan might play three to four positions, MSU head men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo is making a similar call about his athletic freshman.

“I think (he) can play two or three positions, and I hope not to move him around too much early because I don’t want to confuse him
