ASMSU works with U to fix facilities

October 11, 2001

Administrators and members of ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, met Tuesday to hash out the next step to improve the intramural sports facilities on campus.

Lee June, vice president for student affairs and services, and Fred Poston, vice president for finance and operations, answered students’ questions and gave information on what is possible in the future.

“I think the meeting went well,” June said. “The purpose was to look at the preliminary report and decide what the next step is - and I think we accomplished those goals.”

That next step is the creation of a steering committee, which will consist of five students and representatives from the Physical Plant, Intramural Sports and Recreative Services, the 2020 Vision project and Housing and Food Services.

“(Students) wanted a real voice in the next step, and this steering committee provides a chance from them to have an ongoing voice, beyond one year,” June said.

The purpose of the committee is to make an inventory assessment of the current facilities and make a list of priorities and present them to Poston.

From there it all depends on how much money is available.

Lawrence Sierra, director of Intramural Sports and Recreative Services, and a student, who is yet to be chosen, will serve as co-chairpersons for the committee.

Sierra agreed the meeting went well and said he was impressed with ASMSU Student Assembly and its commitment over the years.

“ASMSU did a terrific job,” Sierra said. “This is really an ASMSU activity.”

Sierra said including students will help promote togetherness among students and administrators.

He said his employees are assessing the facilities in conjunction with the committee and he welcomes help from other students who have input.

James Perra, chairperson for the ASMSU Student Assembly’s Intramural Ad-Hoc Committee, agreed it is going in the right direction, but wished this could have been done last year.

“We are moving toward IM improvements, but we have been doing this for three years and just today we ran into several logistical problems,” he said.

“We have to be on par with schools. Our facilities here are way outdated.”
