Stabenow to discuss recent attacks with campus

September 27, 2001

U.S. Sen. and MSU alumna Debbie Stabenow will speak to students on campus today about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and what can be done for the future.

Stabenow, D-Lansing, will discuss the fact that despite national struggles in the past, the government has still managed to pass significant legislation.

She will also address the diverse American culture and her experiences as a senator.

This will be the first time since the attack Stabenow has spoken on campus.

“She has spoken in different venues, but not to students,” said Shanna Singh, Stabenow’s press secretary.

Stabenow spoke to the U.S. Senate on Sept. 13 expressing her concern that some Americans might use the attack as an excuse to discriminate or commit acts of violence against Arab Americans.

The lecture will take place from 3-4:50 p.m. in Room 8 of Holden Hall. Seating will be first-come, first-served for those not in Fayyaz Hussain’s Integrated Studies in Social Sciences class.

Hussain, a visiting assistant professor, hopes the lecture will improve student morale.

“Students have been so depressed and angry, we need to talk about something positive,” he said.
