McPherson to speak at RHA meeting

September 19, 2001

MSU President M. Peter McPherson will speak at an open forum today during the Residence Halls Association’s meeting.

McPherson is expected to arrive at the meeting at around 8 p.m., and the forum will last about an hour. The meeting will be held in the Wonders Hall Kiva.

Jeff Donofrio, director of public relations for RHA, said McPherson will address questions and concerns from the RHA executive board, general assembly and anyone else. The forum is open to all students.

“It will give students a chance to ask him why he decided not to cancel classes (Tuesday) in wake of the tragic events in New York,” Donofrio said.

McPherson attends an RHA meeting twice each year, once at the beginning of the fall semester and again in the spring.

Betsy Lewis, comptroller for RHA, said it is always a privilege to have the president speak at the meetings, and she is looking forward to a face-to-face conversation with him.

“Everyone in our organization is looking forward to the opportunity to share their ideas with McPherson,” Lewis said.

Amy Sa’id, Michigan organizational communication coordinator for RHA, said McPherson always answers questions and concerns students have.

Sa’id added McPherson is always fun to talk to and because he comes at the beginning of each semester, it gives RHA a “head start” as to what issues need to be dealt with during the course of the semester.

“He is very responsive to us, and he always tries to talk to us in a way that he doesn’t overstep his position as president,” Sa’id said.
