First game rain-out preludes mens soccer win

The MSU men’s soccer team topped Cleveland State 2-0 on Sunday at Old College Field in its only game of the weekend.

The Spartans’ game against Bowling Green Friday was washed away by rain at halftime of a scoreless game. The schools are trying to reschedule the game for later in the season.

Sunday’s game was also 0-0 at the half, but freshman forward Ryan McMahen tallied twice in the second half, lifting MSU (3-0) to victory. Junior forward Brett Konley assisted on both goals.

Despite McMahen’s heroics, MSU head coach Joe Baum felt the Spartans worked strongly together as a team.

“I thought we came up with a real solid effort here today,” Baum said. “It was just an outstanding team effort.”

MSU peppered the Viking net with 23 shots, while Cleveland State (1-3) only managed to shoot seven. MSU sophomore goalkeeper Mike Robinson made three saves for his first shutout of the season.

“I thought we just came out and played good team defense,” Baum said.

MSU is next scheduled to play UNLV at 10:30 p.m. Friday in Las Vegas.
