Case Hall hosts discussion on terrorist attacks today

September 25, 2001

A panel of faculty from James Madison College will lead a discussion today about the probable effects of the U.S. response to the recent terrorist attacks.

The discussion will take place at 4:30 p.m. in Room 339, Case Hall.

Five faculty members are scheduled to speak briefly regarding the topic with the opportunity for students to ask questions.

“We plan to have a thoughtful, reflective discussion of the response so far and what it all means,” said Norman Graham, associate dean of James Madison College. “We want to make sure people have a good information base to observe issues.”

Sherman Garnett, James Madison dean, said the goal of the discussion is to lay out questions and observations, not hold a lecture.

“Each person will probably talk for five to six minutes,” he said. “We expect most of the questions and answers to come from the students.”

And Garnett said the discussion relates directly to the curriculum of the college.

“I am going to talk about the use of force and potential pitfalls, better understanding of the Islamic world and political problems that arise in worlds with less democracy and how the young people are responding,” he said.
