U wanted MTV2? Officials fill request

September 11, 2001

Do you miss the days when MTV played more music videos?

MTV2 has now been added to the University Housing Cable Channel, a blessing for music fans on campus, some say.

Added at the start of the fall semester, MTV2 on Channel 16 showcases music videos 24 hours a day.

“They came to us and offered their channel for free,” said Doug Owen, manager of the University Housing Cable Channel.

“It was a deal we couldn’t resist since we were aware of the positive response College Television Network received. We knew that students would love to have MTV2.”

Owen said MTV2 gave the housing channel a lot of support and promotional items in the past, so officials did not hesitate to add the music channel to their roster when they got the call.

Besides AT&T Broadband, MSU’s housing channel is the only local provider of MTV2, Owen said.

“I was so surprised to see it,” said Eric Kim, an accounting junior. “When I was browsing through my channels, I saw it on channel 16 and thought something went wrong with my TV.”

Kim said MTV2 was a valuable addition because it is one of the only channels that has nonstop music.

Jason Mccullough, a computer science senior, agrees.

“It’s so refreshing to see a music channel that actually plays music nonstop,” he said. “I’ll definitely be watching it in the future.”

Mccullogh said he hopes the University Housing Cable Channel will add some other channels that are devoted to one topic, such as the Sci-Fi Channel.

But the addition of MTV2 is not the only new feature being offered.

Owen said a cable viewing guide can now be found on the Web at tvguide.com or zap2it.com, by entering a campus zip code and clicking on the link for MSU offerings.

Japanese animation has also returned to channel 12. The series “Guyver” can be seen weekdays at 4 p.m.

Upcoming series include “Macross Plus,” “Appleseed,” “Street Fighter” and “Tank Police.”

Owen said over the past couple of years, the University Housing Cable Channel has responded to requests from students for new channels.

“The addition of channels like Cartoon Network and Comedy Central were all results of requests from students,” he said.
