Spartan football Family Fun Day slated for Aug. 19

August 1, 2001

Families seeking a piece of MSU football history can meet the 2001 Spartans before their Sept. 8 season kickoff against Central Michigan.

The MSU football team will host its annual Family Fun Day in Spartan Stadium from about 4:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 19.

It’s a day the football team looks forward to because the players can get football off their minds and put a smile on children’s faces.

“I think it’s great,” sophomore tailback Tyrell Dortch said. “Working in camp hard all summer, (Family Fun Day) lifts you up more, seeing little kids coming in line to get autographs.”

The day will begin with the last 30 minutes of football practice - which will be dedicated to special teams - and that will be followed by an autograph and picture session with players and coaches.

“It’s an all-around good day for the players and coaches,” Dortch said.

Kids who want to become a Spartan for the day will be fitted with wrist-wrapping and black under-eye paint by the MSU trainers. The MSU cheerleaders will also be on hand to help distribute free poster schedules to Spartan fans.

Family Fun Day will also debut the MSU College of Engineering’s redesign of the Spartan Chariot.

The chariot will now be pulled by a team of Andalusian horses that were purchased by the College of Veterinary Medicine with a grant from the Irwin Foundation. Also, Brian Nelson, a faculty member in the Department of Animal Science, will assume duties as the charioteer. His new Spartan costume was designed by students from the MSU Department of Theatre.
