I am writing in regards to Stephen MacGuidwins reaction to the increase in ticket prices ( Increase in ticket prices isnt right, SN 4/18). First of all, MacGuidwins comment that he would rather pay $1 a game more, and watch co-Big Ten champion Wolverines play than save and stand another season like last years was ridiculously fair-weatherish. Hes basically saying if the team had won the Big Ten last year, he would have stood for the extra $2.50 per game on next seasons ticket prices.
Fifteen dollars more a season is not enough to gripe about. Besides, its only $15 out of your pocket - but its going to be an extra few hundred grand in the universitys pocket - and if that means theyre going to put in real grass, then I am all for it.
Artificial grass, contrary to what MacGuidwin suggests, is not at all trivial. There is something seriously dangerous about laying some concrete, painting it green, and calling it a football field. Ask any football player if he had to choose between real and artificial grass which he would choose. I guarantee 100 percent of the time, the answer would be real turf.
For recruits who have always wanted to go to MSU, it probably doesnt make a difference. For borderline recruits, the grass will win. Every time. After all, if MSU can install grass, I am all for it. But even if I didnt support it, I wouldnt resort to the fickleness of saying Id rather pay an extra dollar to watch our most hated rival.
That would be the epitome of a fair-weather fan.
